Bucket List #69

#69 Buy a piece of art

As mentioned in a previous post, the lovely and talented Jude Remedios generously donated some of her original artwork to my Free The Children fundraiser garage sale.

Before putting them up for sale, I looked through the canvases to see if there was anything that spoke to me.

One in particular did.

The painting is on a 20″ x 30″ canvas, and is titled “The Secret.” It’s the portrait of the left side of a young woman’s face, whom it’s of I do not know.

The colours match nicely with my room’s decor, and the painting reminded me of myself, so I just had to have it.

Plus, Jude is an award-winning artist and a juried member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. That’s no small deal.

We sold the canvases at the garage sale for $20 each, an extremely good bargain. Where else could I have gotten a cool piece of art for that price?

3 goals down, 98 left to go.

Third Day of Summer

I thought that yesterday was the first official day of summer: it turns out that June 22 is the second day.

And because I completely forgot to blog yesterday, today, the third day of summer, is going to be my first day of vacation.

So happy third day of summer!

When my sister and I were younger, our dad used to print out calendars for the months of July and August, and each day we would draw a little picture depicting what we had done the day before. Thinking back to those calendars, our summer days used to be filled with countless trips to the water park, bike rides and playing in the backyard with our plastic lizards, dogs, cats and horses which we generically called “guys.”

This year, I plan on going to the Cultus Lake waterslides, bike riding around Stanley Park and playing in the backyard with my real dog Romeo.

My travels as a B.C. Ambassador include Osoyoos, Princeton, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Kelowna, Oliver and Lytton (it’s going to be a busy summer).

And on top of enjoying the lovely White Rock beach as much as possible, I’d like to complete a couple of things on my 10 Year List, namely white water rafting, reading, learning to dance, watching a movie at a drive-in and trying my hand at painting.

This is going to be a great summer.

Lions’ Pancake Breakfast

A short and belated Happy Fathers’ Day post:

Yesterday I went to the Peach Arch Monarch Lions’ traditional Fathers’ Day pancake breakfast as a B.C. Ambassador.

This is my third time helping out: I helped as a Miss White Rock candidate, Miss White Rock and this time under my current title.

The Peace Arch Monarch Lions were my White Rock sponsor, so I’m happy to help them out whenever I have the chance.

So I woke up at 6 a.m. on Sunday to get ready (royalty take a long time to get ready) and headed to the hall for 8 a.m.

I helped serve coffee, poured glasses of juice and chit-chatted with the many families who showed up to support the Lions and take dad out for a scrumptious breakfast.

Volunteering at local events has been one of my favourite parts of my ambassador days. And even though I will no longer be allowed to wear a crown after August, I know I’ll find a way to remain involved.

Happy (belated) Fathers’ Day!

Free the Children Fundraiser

Yesterday, I held my second fundraiser garage sale for Free The Children, and to great success.

As British Columbia Ambassadors, my team and I have dedicated our reign to raising funds to build a school in Kenya, through Craig Kielburger’s Free The Children organization.

The school has been a two-year projec started by our ambassador predecessors, and the goal is close to being achieved with the help of family, friends and the generous communities of B.C.

At the beginning of my reign, we had several grand left to raise. Now, the three of us have about $1,000 each left to fundraise.

My first fundraiser garage sale was in my hometown of White Rock a couple of weeks ago. And despite the lousy weather, I managed to raise $450.

Yesterday, we (my family and I) took the same trinkets and treasures we hadn’t managed to sell in White Rock to Pitt Meadows for a second attempt. We set up shop in my Aunt and Uncle’s garage, and sold over $350 in just a few hours.

I have only $200 or so left to raise!

Thank you’s to all of the people who have helped me and my team out:

@BobSongs, UB and AL thank you for the garage sale items, generous donations in both dollar amounts and time, and your unwavering enthusiasm.

Thanks to my grandparents for the handmade birdhouses and boxes upon boxes of garage sale stuff that made me a goldmine at both fundraisers.

Thank you to my parents and sister Chloe for all of your help, time and effort, and for keeping me in check when the crown and all of the attention it attracts starts to go to my head.

A special shout out to Jude Remedios for donating some beautiful pieces of art for my garage sale.

(You can check out her work at www.juderemedios.com).

To reach my $1,000 goal, I will be selling homemade birdhouses and craft kits at the White Rock Farmers’ Market on Sunday, June 27.

Bucket List #10

#10 Complete a crossword by myself

This one is pretty self-explanatory.

The reason I put it on my list is because I have never actually completed a crossword, and I generally need quite a bit of help to even get close to finishing.

This frustrated me because I can’t stand not finishing things, and because I am going into journalism, so words, knowledge and current events should be my specialties!

But I finally did it, restoring my self-esteem and removing the doubts I had begun to have about going into journalism.

(The crossword completed was the 24Hrs Monday puzzle. It really is harder than it looks…)

Bucket List #23

As I’d mentioned in an earlier post, my friend @JSaggau and I have created our own versions of the typial bucket list.

We each wrote an individual list of 101 things we want to accomplish in our lives. The kicker is that we plan on completing all 101 things in 10 years.

We were both quite ambitious with our lists, but we figured that if we can’t finish them, the remaining goals will merely be transferred to our next ten year list.

Of course the lists are about living life to the fullest and experiencing new things, but we’ve also turned it into a bit of a competition: we have a running bet on who reaches five goals, 10 goals, 15 goals… first.

And I’m losing.

It’s 3-2 for @JSaggau (I’m including the next post in my tally). You can check out his list at www.mytenyearlist.blogspot.com.

#23 Go Camping

Putting “Go Camping” on my list of 101 things may seem a little out of place. I mean, who hasn’t gone camping? And why is such a regular activity worthy enough to warrant taking up 0.99% of my precious list?

For starters, I have never been camping. I have also never viewed camping as something enjoyable, fun or anything I would ever do willingly.

When I was in elementary school, I was a part of Girl Guides mostly against my will. I was a shy little girl to begin with, and I didn’t have any friends in the club and the meetings were held in a smelly public school gym.

I didn’t think my Thursday nights could get any worse… Until I found out that I needed to go camping.

I won’t get into the details, but let’s just say everything that could have gone wrong that camping weekend most certainly did.

The trip took place in the chilly month of November, in Fort Langley, I was away from my parents, I had a leak in my tent and it poured rain all night, there were bugs everywhere, we didn’t do anything fun, I had to clean the dishes on spaghetti night (which was absolutely repulsive) and there were three other girls named Hayley which just added to my confused disorientation.

This past May Long Weekend I came face-to-face with my fear of camping for the first time since my horrific childhood experience. And after a few days of reflection and several nice hot showers, I can now accurately report on the experience.

The weather wasn’t the nicest, and my tent was uncomfortable and far too small. But camping is definitely much more fun with friends, a roaring campfire and lots of food.

The experience wasn’t as treacherous as I thought it would be, but my idea of a vacation is still a nice 5-star all-inclusive hotel on a white sandy beach somewhere tropical, where I don’t have to cook, and there are bathrooms available.

Would I go again?

On several conditions: a bigger tent (a cabin would be nice), actual washrooms and maybe a nice lake nearby with readily accessible boats for tubing and water skiing.

Either way, I’m glad Iwent, and I honestly did have a blast hanging out with my friends and relaxing in the wilderness.

1 down, 100 left to go.
